In the Wet: caught in a squalid Canberra parliamentary office trying to figure out how to tackle global warming during a particularly cold winter, a wet-behind-the-ears (hence the title) energy minister, known only by his nickname Chris Bowen, is forced to decide how to keep the lights on despite there being no wind and certainly no sun to speak of, given it’s been bucketing down for months on end (hence the title, again).

As we approach the 70th anniversary of the publication of the classic Australian novel In the Wet by English-Australian author Nevil Shute, moves are rumoured to be afoot at a publishing house to update the original version to make it more reflective of the values of today’s more enlightened, compassionate and progressive Australia.Īt the same time, the chair of diversity and inclusion in classical literature at Sydney University, Professor Rowena Beech-Alice, is demanding all of Shute’s work be updated to better suit today’s more diverse and inclusive readership.
